Al Gore’s documentary on global warming seems to have quite an impact on mainstream media as well as the blogosphere, which is quite busy busy discussing the topic. While this guy is right on when he says Gore is too verbose and dramatic, I have to say that’s the only way to get to the masses today. If you call that dramatic, how would you call Bush’s war on terror? Anyhow, anyone stating we do not have a meteorological problem should ask: Are all these hurricanes we had in the last years a natural occurence? Sure, we are not melting, and the 0.3 to 0.6 degrees Celsius since 1850 might seem puny. The hurricanes are the first signs that small changes can have a big impact locally. I would not bet on the fact that there has been a slight decrease in the last years. Based on several studies temperatures are expected to increase by 1.4 to 5.8 °C between 1990 and 2020. If a 0.6 degree increase is capable of creating devastating hurricanes, what do you think 5.8 degrees can do to our climate? Kyoto was not a carnival, it was an international agreement that should not be taken too easy.
